About

Inspired by the work of Thomas Berry, Brian Thomas Swimme founded the Center for the Story of the Universe. The Center offers award-winning videos to expand our collective consciousness and redirect the current self-destructive trajectory of society towards a vibrant community that transcends individual, human and geo-political boundaries.

The major institutions of the modern world, including our schools and universities, our corporations, our religious organizations, and our legal systems are in transition. We realize all of them are implicated, in various ways, in the ongoing distortions of climate and ecosystems. The question for any concerned person is how best to assist the transition.

The driver of this change is the discovery of a time-developmental universe. Each being in the universe is a fourteen billion year creation. As we absorb the fact that humans are cousins to every living being, modern industrial mentality loses some of its grips and a cosmological, time-developmental consciousness begins to emerge.

No previous generation knew the temporal sequence of cosmological transformations that brought humanity forth. Those of us exploring the implications this discovery has for consciousness are venturing onto untrodden land. The transition will take centuries. We need to remember that any suggestion of having final answers is pure folly.

These video programs are offered as a way to enter the conversation of how we can live together in mutually enhancing ways and bring forth a vibrant, flourishing Earth Community.

Brian Thomas Swimme is the Director of the Center for the Story of the Universe and a professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Oregon in 1978 for work in gravitational dynamics. He brings the context of story to our understanding of the 13.7 billion year trajectory of the universe. Such a story, he feels, will assist in the emergence of a flourishing Earth community.

Journey of the Universe won the Northern California regional Emmy for Best Documentary, 2011.

Swimme is the author of The Hidden Heart of the Cosmos and The Universe is a Green Dragon. He is co-author of The Universe Story, which is the result of a ten-year collaboration with cultural historian, Thomas Berry. Swimme is also the creator of three educational video series: Canticle to the Cosmos, The Earth’s Imagination, and The Powers of the Universe. Most recently he co-wrote and hosted the 60-minute film Journey of the Universe, broadcast on PBS television stations nationwide.

He lectures widely and has presented at conferences sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The World Bank, UNESCO, The United Nations Millennium Peace Summit, and the American Museum of Natural History.
